Apple TV+ created history as the first internet streaming service to win the best picture Oscar for its feature film ‘CODA,’ a heartwarming comedy-drama about the daughter of deaf parents who pursues her passion for music.
The movie also won another prize as Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Frank Rossi and Sian Heder won Best Adapted Screenplay for the same film.
Director Jane Campion won Best Director for her period Western ‘The Power of the Dog,’ as the first-ever woman nominated twice for the same award. Actor Will Smith won his first-ever Oscar for his role as the father of the tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams in ‘King Richard.’ Kenneth Branagh also won his first Oscar for writing the British coming-of-age drama film ‘Belfast.’
Director Denis Villeneuve’s stunning space opera ‘Dune’ dominated most of the technical awards, securing six of the Oscars it was nominated for, including Cinematography, Visual Effects, Film Editing, Score, Best Sound, and Production Design.
However, the ceremony was marred by best-actor winner Will Smith’s slapping of presenter Chris Rock. Smith walked up to the stage and delivered an open-handed slap to actor/comedian Chris Rock for the latter’s joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
