CBD Drug Shows Favorable Safety Profile in Heart Patients, Study Finds

Recent clinical research indicates that CBD from pharmaceutical sources is safe for people with heart conditions.

Results from a study presented at the ESC Heart Failure Congress 2025 indicate that pharmaceutical-grade CBD may be safe for heart patients. The hospital admitted 89 people with CVD or CVD risk for noncritical COVID-19 and tested their treatment. Participants were assigned to receive either oral CBD or a placebo, both day and night for 28 days, after which they were monitored until day 60.

No evidence of a difference in AEs or serious AEs was detected in the CBD group compared to the placebo group. No one in the CBD group died, but two deaths in the placebo group were linked to respiratory failure. Gastrointestinal and nervous system reactions to the vaccine were about the same for both groups. An electrocardiogram showed that heart rhythm was normal after using CBD.

No scary signals were found during the trial, even though enrollment was very low, so Dr. Cooper believes further work should be done on CBD therapies for heart patients.

Preclinical studies have discovered that CBD which is not psychoactive, has anti-inflammatory effects. The drug may be helpful in treating illnesses like myocarditis and pericarditis. Right now, the FDA has only endorsed Epidiolex, a CBD product, for treating seizures.

Assessing effectiveness was not possible in this trial, but more information about CBD’s cardiovascular benefits will emerge later this year and in 2026 from the ARCHER and MAVERIC trials.
