UK moves closer to end its recession

February's British economy growth indicated progress towards recession, despite record-high rainfall and a washout month for retailers, indicating the nation's near-recovery status.

After one of the rainiest beginnings to a year on record and a washout month for shops, official numbers for February's growth in the British economy revealed that the country was getting closer to emerging from recession. The GDP increased by 0.1% in February, according to the Office for National Statistics, which was in line with predictions made by city analysts and continued the upward trend that began in January when growth was revised up from 0.2% to 0.3%.

According to Liz McKeown, head of economic statistics at the ONS, February saw a modest increase in the economy as a whole and widespread expansion in the manufacturing sector, especially in the auto industry. Public transportation, haulage, and telecommunications all saw solid months of growth in services.

She went on to say that while the damp weather affected several building projects, there were notable falls across construction, partially offsetting this. The UK's contraction in the third and fourth quarters of 2023 qualified it for the technical definition of a recession. In order to satisfy a quarterly return to growth, the current downturn must be stopped by continuing to expand in March. With the Conservatives lagging Labor in opinion polls, Rishi Sunak is under pressure to demonstrate economic success before voters head to the polls for a general election later this year.
