Southern Research unveils a new $98M BioTech building in Birmingham and provides new employment and connects Birmingham to the work in medical innovation.
Southern Research officially opened a new $98 million BioTech facility in Birmingham which is the largest milestone in the biotechnology industry of the city. The new 150,000-square-foot facility will make Birmingham the center of BioTech area, where new medicines and molecules should be discovered.
Harry Ledebur who is Chief Operating Officer of Southern Research indicated that it is the first new structure on campus since 1987. The plant will result in at least 100 jobs and an investment of over 80 million in the local economy within a couple of years.
Mayor Randall Woodfin commented that BioTech is part of what makes Birmingham, saying that the city has a robust ecosystem including startups in the Southern Research Station 41 incubator as well as world-renowned scientists at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB).
Being on the former territory of Quinlan Castle, the facility will cater to commercial pharmaceutical firms and the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as the Department of Health and Human Services. Employees will start occupying the property as soon as they can, and it marks the beginning of a new age in the BioTech industry of Birmingham.
