Novartis acquires Myricx Bio in a deal worth up to $1.5 billion, strengthening its oncology pipeline with next-generation antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) technology.
Novartis acquires Myricx Bio with $1.5 billion to transform cancer treatment. A $1.1 billion upfront payment and possible milestone payments of up to $400 million are part of the agreement. It is anticipated to close in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory clearances and typical closing conditions.
The payloads of N-myristoyltransferase inhibitor (NMTi) are being utilized by Myricx Bio for development of Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs) that specifically kill cancer cells. The limitations of the current generation of ADC payload families, such as TOPO-1 inhibitors, which are expected to be resolved through use of the next-generation payloads. According to the reports tracked by CIO Bulletin, the two lead compounds targeting the tumor-associated targets B7 homologue 3 and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 are in the company's pipeline, suggesting potential use in a variety of solid tumor types.
"ADCs have become an important part of cancer treatment, but there remains a clear need for new payload mechanisms to overcome resistance and expand their impact for patients." - Fiona Marshall, President of Biomedical Research at Novartis.
Preclinical evidence suggests that the NMTi payloads may exhibit widespread efficacy in solid tumors, including those that are resistant to current treatments like TOPO-1 inhibitors. Through the collaboration, Novartis would be able to help establish NMTi as a new class of ADC payloads that may be utilized for a range of targets and platforms, pending clinical validation.
Prior this, Novartis Itvisma had been authorized by the European Commission as therapy for patients above age 2 having 5q spinal muscular atrophy from a mutation in two alleles of survival motor neuron 1 gene.
Given how far the assets were from any possible launch, the analysts added that any profits from the transaction would probably come later and that Novartis would need to increase spending in order to finance their development.
