As part of efforts to control infectious disease, healthcare alerts and recommendations are issued after California reports first U.S. linked monkeypox case to an African outbreak.
With a recent surge of cases reported in many parts of Africa, California has reported the first case of monkeypox in America that has a direct epidemiological link to Africa. An unnamed woman who had visited East Africa a few weeks earlier is the patient who been located within San Mateo County which is in the south of San Francisco. According to the CDC California Department of Public health the patient is at her residence under self-isolation.
The Ib Clade variant of monkeypox has caused numerous infections in Africa, including Congo and Uganda. While Clade Ib is spreading in Southern Africa, there is no evidence of it in the United States. Health officials are investigating patient contacts for testing.
This outbreak has spurred heightened vigilance and public health alerts in the U.S., and healthcare providers are being told to watch for monkeypox symptoms, characterized by a painful rash, fever and swollen lymph nodes. And the CDC has issued a health advisory urging people at risk, such as sexually active gay and bisexual men, to get two doses of the Jynneos vaccine that works against the virus.
Human and animal contacts like sexual activity can spread the global spread of monkeypox. Interventions are essential to stop further spread of the disease and to isolate patients, say public health officials. Despite the threat of Clade Ib in the US, the recent case in California highlights ongoing challenges in controlling infectious diseases and preparing for potential epidemics.
