Sony Pictures Networks India expands its south regional footprint with the launch of Sony VIZHA, entering the high-demand Tamil broadcast market this October with culturally rooted entertainment.
Sony Pictures Networks India has officially announced the launch of a brand new Tamil entertainment channel called Sony VIZHA, which is set to premiere in October. This is an early step into the Tamil television space, with a focus on local culture, traditions, and emotions. Other large companies are trying to ensure their loyalty among viewers in Asia, as regional content expansion is deemed necessary to progress in a rapidly changing market.
The channel has been introduced under the name of Vizha, which in Tamil refers to “festival” or “celebration”, with the launch reflecting the success of Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu. It is planned that SPNI will work on high-quality production when it comes to local stories, providing programming aimed at a family audience across Tamil Nadu and throughout the world.
Programming Mix: The channels will run a variety of programming, including dramatic series, reality shows, and the premieres of major feature movies.
Visual Identity: The channel features its own logo that combines bright yellow and electric blue colors.
In this context, the introduction of Tamil programming marks a turning point as it signifies the trend in the market whereby major television networks are looking to go beyond a market that was previously restricted to Hindi-language shows. The objective is to take the rich Tamil heritage and use it to develop appealing content for the audience in Tamil Nadu and around the globe.
"With Sony VIZHA, we are taking a heartfelt step into Tamil entertainment. This is a market with a rich creative legacy, a deeply expressive language and audiences who have always embraced stories with emotion, honesty and cultural pride," Rajaraman Sundaram, Chief Content Officer – South Regional at SPNI.
As leading players in the field are working to leave their mark in new marketplaces, the need for substantial investment in genuine content that can connect with the audiences, thus ensuring ad revenues, cannot be overlooked. Changes in consumer trends and economic signs make it possible for the companies to allocate funds to new regional initiatives.
Relying on its deep production history behind hits like Kaun Banega Crorepati and Indian Idol, SPNI intends to adapt popular entertainment engines specifically for Tamil-speaking viewers. The upcoming October launch will span both traditional television broadcasts and digital streaming platforms to reach viewers wherever they choose to watch.
As conventional networks keep branching out into varied areas, genuine localized content plays an important role in establishing strong relationships with viewers as well as ensuring regular ad revenue. Changing consumer habits and wider economic changes have a major effect on how media companies distribute budgets for localized projects. CIO Bulletin views this development as evident proof of how traditional networks are reinventing their growth strategy through regional programming moves.
