When Seven Years of Quiet Ended: Inside the Raging Waters Of Nashik District Floods

Nature has shown its fierce power as severe Nashik district floods gripped the region, marking the first major surge on the Godavari River in seven years. Heavy downpours exceeding 116mm overnight forced surging waters over riverbanks, completely submerging the iconic Dutondya Maruti idol, the city's traditional flood benchmark, for nearly three hours.

As global media analysts at CIO Bulletin report, the sudden deluge caught residents and local traders completely off guard. Floodwaters aggressively pushed into low-lying zones like Bhandi Bazaar near Ramkund, affecting dozens of shops. Fearing worse, nearly 300 merchants hastily scrambled to move expensive stock and valuables to safety. Meanwhile, key transit points like the Ramsetu Bridge vanished beneath the rushing torrents for over 24 hours.

Chaos Across The City

The relentless weather disruption extended far beyond the riverbanks, creating widespread emergency situations across municipal limits:

• Massive Infrastructure Impact: The Nashik Municipal Corporation received 79 frantic emergency calls within a 24-hour window, logging 42 separate tree-fall incidents.

• Collectorate Damage: A massive uprooted tree crashed down inside the district collectorate compound, crushing ten parked cars and a two-wheeler.

• Structural Collapses: Days of continuous battering also brought down an old vacant Wada structure in the historic Panchavati neighborhood.

According to local irrigation tracking, water discharge from the weir near Ramkund peaked at a staggering 27,747 cusec during the height of the crisis, before slowly receding as rain intensity eased.

“This is the first time in seven years that the Dutondya Maruti idol has been completely submerged. The previous such flood was witnessed in Sept 2019,” said Devang Jani, a local environmentalist and social activist residing near Godaghat.

With the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert and projecting continued moderate rainfall, local disaster teams remain on high alert to handle any further emergencies.
