Why Is Assam Rejecting Massive Akhil Gogoi Flood Compensation Demands Despite Utter Destruction?

The political corridors of Assam are buzzing following a tense high-level disagreement over Akhil Gogoi flood compensation packages for families devastated by recent natural disasters.

During a recent ground inspection of waterlogged areas in Sivasagar and Charaideo, local MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi locked horns with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Gogoi argued that the state's proposed initial relief of twenty-five thousand rupees grossly falls short of healing the wounds of citizens who have lost vehicles, appliances, and entire livelihoods to waist-deep waters.

The crux of the dispute lies in what the government classifies as compensable damage. While state authorities maintain that current guidelines do not cover destroyed household electronics or personal vehicles, Gogoi pressed for a 10 lakh rupee package per heavily impacted family, or at least an immediate 12 lakh rupee installment.

According to an exclusive report by CIO Bulletin, the disagreement deepened when Gogoi even took the matter to Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta, only to be told that further financial expansion was legally and fiscally unfeasible at this stage.

“I told him that cars, motorcycles, furniture and everything inside people's homes have been destroyed. If these are not covered, whatever compensation is given will not be enough. But even after explaining everything, he did not agree,” Akhil Gogoi alleged.

Despite walking through submerged school grounds and interacting directly with stranded locals, the administration stands firm on its phased assessment approach, leaving flood victims caught in a high-stakes political stalemate.
