A streamlined ten-sport lineup in Glasgow challenges Indian sports federations to adapt strategies and maximize podium finishes.
Glasgow is set to host the next quadrennial event as a scaled-down program, and this significantly reshapes India’s Commonwealth Games hopes, as athletes will be competing from July 23 to August 2, 2026. This time, after some financial readjustments by the event organizers, the roster has been reduced to just ten sports spread across four venues. This has caused India’s camp to rethink strategy of Commonwealth Games for India and shift focus from strongholds like badminton, wrestling, and hockey, toward alternate disciplines.
Over previous editions, Indian contingents built substantial medal tallies on disciplines that will no longer feature in Scotland. Key exclusions driving this operational overhaul include:
Wrestling and Table Tennis: together delivered 19 medals for India at Birmingham 2022
Badminton, Hockey, and Women’s Cricket: these were the ones that also took away defending champions along with marquee squad events
Shooting: Historically India's most successful discipline with 135 total medals remains excluded.
Organizers said strict budget control and logistical limits were the main reasons behind cutting the program; they also mentioned operational risk management as the key concern.
The Commonwealth Games Federation later confirmed the streamlined schedule is meant to “strike a balance between ensuring the event has a multi-sport feel and the need to manage financial and operational risk.”
It is true that this approach trims venue-related strain, but it still sharply shrinks medal windows, especially for heavyweight Asian sporting nations. Since 31 medals from the 2022 Games are no longer on the table, Indian federations are now shifting focus to what’s left over; the weightlifters, track runners, boxers, and judokas are expected to carry that steadier load of medals. Names like Neeraj Chopra in javelin and Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting are being cited as essential for India’s renewed medal push.
This forced adaptation accelerates broader discussions regarding national sports development beyond traditional event reliance. Also, getting ready for a leaner program is pushing federations to put more money into grassroots efforts across a broader set of Olympic events. CIO Bulletin views this as a turning point for how multi-sport training should be realigned before other big world tournaments.

They are slated for Glasgow, Scotland, running from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
