Japan is going to offer 'digital nomads' a six-month residency visa

The Immigration Services Agency announced on Friday that Japan will create a new visa status that will facilitate the residency of IT engineers and other employees of foreign companies in the nation.

According to the organization, the proposed status will enable highly qualified workers to work remotely from Japan for a maximum of six months while taking trips to see the sights.

Japan intends to establish a framework that will enable "digital nomads" to work remotely from any location. This approach is intended to draw in a variety of foreign workers and consultants, as well as YouTubers who receive advertising money from foreign businesses.

The organization intends to start the program at the end of March and will start asking for public feedback on Saturday.

The most comparable status currently in use is primarily used by tourists; it prohibits work and only permits stays of up to 90 days.

Applicants must be citizens of one of the 50 nations and regions that have visa waiver agreements with Japan, earn at least 10 million yen ($68,000) annually, and have private health insurance in order to be eligible for the new status.

Only self-employed individuals who do business for foreign revenue will be qualified for the new status. Family members who are insured by private health insurance will be permitted to accompany them.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, remote work has become increasingly commonplace worldwide. The website A Brother Abroad provides tour information and estimates that there are presently 35 million digital nomads worldwide, and that number is growing.
