From a quirky 1997 car chase to a global money machine, here is how one game series turned chaos into billions.
The GTA $10bn franchise did not begin as a giant. Grand Theft Auto debuted in 1997 as a quirky game involving car theft and escaping from the police. Over twenty-five years later, it is one of the most valuable pieces of entertainment IP around.
But it all changed with the release of Grand Theft Auto 3, where the franchise got its true identity as a three-dimensional open-world game. Gamers had the freedom to explore an entire city while completing missions or just wreaking havoc. Both Vice City and San Andreas proved that every game world has its own unique character. Just Vice City managed sales of 1.4 million copies within just two days!
Then came GTA V in 2013. Despite expectations that this trend would eventually taper off, Grand Theft Auto continues to generate profits, mostly because of its multiplayer feature called Grand Theft Auto Online. The publishing company Take-Two Interactive has stated that up until 2023, the franchise had generated revenues of $8.4 billion since the release of Grand Theft Auto V, with sales close to 405 million copies.
Vice City sold 1.4 million copies in just two days.
GTA V passed 185 million sales worldwide.
The series crossed 405 million copies sold in total.
A GTA 6 trailer drew 93 million views in one day.
Part of the answer is patience. Rockstar Games, the studio behind the series, takes years between major releases, so every new title feels like an event. Take-Two Chief Executive Strauss Zelnick has explained the approach, saying, “We think you need to create enormous anticipation.” Is that rare mix of scarcity and hype the real secret behind the billions?
There is a lesson here for any company. Build something people want to return to, keep adding fresh reasons to stay, and never rush the next big launch. CIO Bulletin will keep tracking how the GTA $10bn franchise shapes the wider gaming industry as its next chapter draws closer.

Everything you need to know about this news
Open-world design, record game sales, and steady GTA Online spending created a money machine that has kept running for well over a decade.
It is the multiplayer mode of GTA V, where players buy in-game items, which helps the game keep earning long after its original launch.
Rockstar Games develops it, while Take-Two Interactive publishes it. Together they form one of gaming’s most powerful partnerships.
Take-Two data showed total franchise sales near 405 million copies by 2023, with GTA V alone passing 185 million.
Long gaps between releases build huge demand, so even a short trailer can pull in tens of millions of views within a day. That kind of excitement is nearly impossible to buy with advertising.
