ABB adds Automation Extended Functionality to its latest Symphony Plus DCS

ABB’s Symphony Plus SPR2025 modernization enables seamless automation upgrades and digital evolution without operational disruption.

On March 18, ABB announced the launch of SPR2025, the latest Symphony Plus distributed control system (DCS). The company highlighted the modernization and efficiency improvements that the process and power industries can expect from this release. Importantly, it also covers upgrades to both existing installations and new deployments. The SPR2025 program enables industries to achieve faster operational processes through its capacity to integrate new automation technologies into their ongoing work while upgrading their existing Harmony Rack-based systems. Customers in power, water, oil and gas, pulp and paper and pharmaceuticals sectors can implement improvements at their own pace to maintain operational continuity with minimal risk. This is made possible by the online upgrades, enhanced OS and virtualization support, powerful conversion tools and a clear evolution path that SPR2025 facilitates.

Furthermore, Symphony Plus customers can adopt advanced automation and digital technologies without disruption with the inclusion of Automation Extended functionality that leverages a separation of concerns architecture. Through this approach, customers can maintain the reliability and security of core control processes. According to Stefan Basenach, Senior Vice President, Process Automation Technology, ABB, “SPR2025 advances our commitment to help customers modernize without disruption, at their own pace, while protecting their existing investments.

Moreover, SPR 2025 includes key enhancements to strengthen system performance and improve lifecycle efficiency in a secure, future-ready operational environment. Some of the prominent updates are:

  • Version synchronization and online upgrades

  • Support for th latest Microsoft operating systems

  • Enhanced OPC UA Connectivity

  • Advanced device management with Field Information Manager (FIM)

  • Expanded system-wide connectivity

  • Seamless evolution with Harmony Rack to SDe Series

At CIO Bulletin, we view ABB’s latest offering as an exciting development that furthers the reach of both ABB Automation and the industry at large. It sets a promising tone for future developments in the automation sphere.
