The strength of a modern business is no longer measured solely by the speed of its logistics or the efficiency of its manufacturing. Today, the true heartbeat of a resilient enterprise lies in the millions of individuals who operate within its global supply chain, often thousands of miles away from corporate headquarters. As global markets demand higher levels of accountability, the silent vulnerabilities within these networks have become impossible to ignore. The organizations poised to lead the next era of commerce are those that recognize that transparency is not a hurdle to be cleared, but a foundation to be built. By placing the human element at the very center of their strategy, these forward-thinking entities are discovering that the most valuable data doesn’t come from sensors or spreadsheets, but from the honest voices of the people who make business possible.
&Wider was born from the conviction that this human perspective is the missing link in sustainable growth. The company’s journey began in 2014, catalyzed by a profound human tragedy at the Marikana platinum mine in South Africa. Witnessing the devastating cost of disconnected management and unsafe working conditions, the founders realized that traditional oversight methods were failing. They envisioned a different path—one where technology could bridge the gap between global boardrooms and the factory floor. What began as a humble initiative involving direct, face-to-face conversations with workers in the multinational fishing industry has blossomed into a sophisticated, tech-driven global platform. Today, &Wider operates with a unique dual-presence, blending the vibrant energy of its implementation hub in Cape Town with the strategic oversight of its historic canal-side headquarters in Amsterdam. This global footprint allows the company to serve clients across Europe and North America, bringing a deeply humanized approach to the complex world of international trade.
Real-Time Insight Through Business-Level Monitoring
For any large-scale enterprise, knowing what is happening on the ground in real time is a logistical nightmare. &Wider simplifies this complexity through its flagship business-level monitoring solution. This platform provides companies with high-quality dashboards that act as a window into the daily lives and human rights impacts within their supplier networks. Unlike traditional annual audits that offer only a fleeting snapshot, this continuous monitoring allows for a dynamic understanding of working conditions.
By integrating strategic support with scalable technology, the platform identifies exactly where and when an intervention is needed. This level of clarity allows management to move away from guesswork and toward precision. The beauty of this system lies in its transparency and accessibility; it provides a direct line of communication that empowers workers while giving brands the confidence that their ethical standards are being upheld. It is a tool designed for accountability, ensuring that every data point reflects a genuine human experience, which in turn fosters a culture of trust and long-term loyalty across the entire value chain.
Strategic Foresight and Landscape Risk Assessments
Understanding the immediate environment is essential, but building a sustainable future requires a broader view of the horizon. &Wider’s Landscape Assessments are designed to track human rights risks and improvements over extended periods, covering entire sectors and specific sourcing geographies. These assessments go beyond the individual factory level to look at the "big picture," gathering direct input from workers and smallholders to reveal patterns that might otherwise stay hidden.
This long-term perspective is crucial for companies that want to stay ahead of shifting social and regulatory landscapes. By identifying systemic issues within a particular region or industry, businesses can collaborate on broader solutions rather than just treating symptoms. This comprehensive mapping of reality highlights opportunities for meaningful improvement, allowing companies to invest their resources where they will have the most significant positive impact on both human lives and supply chain stability.
Predictive Analytics and the RAPT Advantage
In an increasingly unpredictable world, being reactive is no longer enough. The most resilient organizations are those that can anticipate challenges before they manifest as crises. To meet this need &Wider developed the Risk Assessment Prediction Tool (RAPT), a sophisticated solution that combines direct worker reporting with predictive analytics. RAPT acts as an early-warning system, identifying emerging risks in the labor environment before they escalate into operational setbacks or reputational damage.
This proactive stance transforms risk management from a defensive necessity into a strategic advantage. By analyzing trends and anomalies in worker feedback, companies can strengthen their due diligence and safeguard their employees with unprecedented precision. RAPT enables a shift in corporate culture from damage control to preventive care, ensuring that the supply chain remains transparent and robust. This methodology has proven its versatility across 28 different sectors in 73 countries, ranging from construction and logistics to the automotive and energy industries, demonstrating that a human-centered approach is both scalable and globally applicable.
Setting a Benchmark for Ethical Excellence and Growth
The impact of &Wider’s work is felt far beyond the boundaries of a corporate social responsibility report. When workers feel heard and valued, the results are tangible: productivity rises, turnover decreases, and operational resilience strengthens. By elevating the voices of those who were previously invisible, &Wider helps businesses build a reputation for genuine accountability. In a marketplace where consumers and investors increasingly scrutinize the ethics of production, this reputation translates into a powerful competitive edge.
The path ahead for global commerce is clear. The most successful companies will be those that realize their operations are not just sets of transactions, but a collection of human stories. &Wider has redefined the standard for what it means to manage a healthy, ethical, and resilient supply network. Their success serves as a powerful reminder that every product on a shelf and every shipment in a warehouse is connected to a human life. By choosing to listen, businesses don't just protect their bottom line, they honor the dignity of the people who make their success possible, ensuring a future that is as fair as it is prosperous.

With over 23 years of experience, Lea has focused on state-sponsored violence, genocide, forced labour, and violence against children in South Africa, Bosnia, the MENA region, and the UK. She holds a PhD and has designed scalable early warning systems to detect crises and drive timely response. She has worked extensively with civil society actors across the MENA region, Balkans, Sudan, and the UK.
The 2012 Marikana platinum mine tragedy inspired her to tackle invisibility in global supply chains. While raising newborn twins, she spent 18 months researching the issue, leading to the co-founding of &Wider in 2014.
Lea specialises in transforming complex social dynamics into elegant, data-first solutions. She is particularly excited about using &Wider’s primary dataset — spanning 12 sectors and 68 geographies, to train AI models that predict and mitigate human rights risks globally.
She holds degrees from the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University, and a PhD from the University of London. Lea is fluent in two languages and conversationally competent in two more.
