StreetLight, transportation analysis platform

Cornerstone Physiotherapy is a trusted and reliable rehabilitation care provider that provides advanced care from experienced doctors and physiotherapists. Its physiotherapy clinics are present in 10 locations all across the Greater Toronto Area for convenient access. The clinic was founded in 2008 by Adam Brown and Joon Nah, two physiotherapists who are passionate about delivering clinical excellence with exceptional customer service. Its founding philosophy places paramount importance on exceeding patients’ expectations. One of the specialized treatments offered by Cornerstone Physiotherapy is pelvic floor therapy. Often considered as a service meant exclusively for women due to being associated with post-natal recovery, pelvic floor therapy is equally beneficial for male sportspersons and men in general.

Pelvic pain, urinary dysfunction, and core instability is often experienced by men due to high-impact sports, heavy lifting, and intense physical conditioning which increases the stress on the pelvic floor muscles. Recognizing this underserved potential of pelvic floor therapy, Cornerstone Physiotherapy’s team of expert physiotherapists work with patients to restore pelvic stability, provide relief from chronic tension, and optimize core function to facilitate rehabilitation from hidden injuries and achieve peak functioning and performance.

The clinic prioritizes patients; time by ensuring that their therapy session is spent one-on-one with their physiotherapists and not with assistance. All its branches have private treatment rooms for maximum comfort and security. Cornerstone Physiotherapy’s team is redefining the profession through ongoing learning, research, and teaching while also going the extra mile to meet all of its patients’ needs. It has been recognized for its success by being the recipient of 34 awards from multiple respected organizations. Bestowed with GTA’s Top Choice Physiotherapy Clinic of 2026 award, it has 110 team members who are products of the clinic’s comprehensive clinic membership program. The clinic also actively supports philanthropic endeavors by actively supporting various organizations and communities as proud sponsors.

Comprehensive Pelvic Health Services Across Regional Clinics

Cornerstone Physiotherapy operates specialized pelvic health clinics across convenient locations in Toronto, North York, Burlington, Richmond Hill, and Markham, among other locations. Voted the top physiotherapy clinic in the region for five consecutive years, the practice features a dedicated team of registered physiotherapists rostered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. These professionals specialize in diagnosing and treating common pelvic floor issues, including urinary incontinence, chronic pain, and pelvic organ prolapse.

Understanding Pelvic Health Issues

Pelvic floor dysfunctions affect a significant portion of the population, though many individuals manage these symptoms in isolation. Approximately 30% of women suffer from urinary incontinence and over half experience some degree of minor pelvic organ prolapse following vaginal childbirth. While many people attempt self-treatment through Kegel exercises, performing them without clinical guidance or internal feedback often leads to incorrect execution, emphasizing the importance of targeted, professional care.

What to Expect During the Initial Evaluation

Initial appointments are designed to prioritize patient privacy and comfort, taking place entirely within private treatment rooms. Over the course of a one-hour session, the physiotherapist conducts a thorough medical history review before moving on to a comprehensive physical examination of the joints, muscles, and ligaments across the lower back, hips, and pelvis.

Because pelvic floor muscles are situated internally, an internal examination is typically recommended to gain an accurate assessment. However, if a patient is not comfortable with an internal evaluation right away, therapists begin with external assessment techniques and progress only when the patient feels ready. The session concludes with the collaborative development of a customized treatment strategy tailored to the individual's specific goals.

Recognizing Common Symptoms

Pelvic floor dysfunction presents through a variety of daily symptoms that can significantly impact quality of life. Common indicators include:

  • Involuntary leakage of urine or feces (incontinence)

  • Sudden, strong urges to urinate (urgency) or frequent trips to the bathroom (frequency)

  • Waking up multiple times throughout the night to urinate (nocturia)

  • Persistent pressure, burning, or discomfort in the lower abdomen and pelvis

  • Difficulty passing stools or chronic constipation

  • Discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse

Customized Treatment Approaches and Conditions Treated

Treatment plans at Cornerstone Physiotherapy are fully individualized to address each patient's specific diagnosis. Therapeutic approaches typically combine comprehensive patient education, hands-on manual therapy, specialized pelvic exercises, and bowel or bladder tracking. When appropriate, targeted electrical stimulation using specialized internal probes is utilized to help retrain non-responsive pelvic musculature.

These comprehensive care plans address a wide spectrum of health concerns across different life stages and medical conditions:

Bladder and Bowel Dysfunctions: Overactive bladder, interstitial cystitis, painful bladder syndrome, urinary retention, and chronic constipation.

Prenatal and Postpartum Recovery: Care for pregnancy-related pelvic pain, guidance for running while pregnant, core rehabilitation, Diastasis Recti, post-childbirth scar tissue, and safe return-to-exercise protocols.

Men’s Health and Gender-Affirming Care: Management of erectile dysfunction, pre- and post-prostatectomy rehabilitation, and recovery support following transition-related procedures such as chest surgeries, vaginoplasty, or metoidioplasty.

Chronic Pain and Structural Issues: Tailbone pain (coccydynia), Levator Ani syndrome, pudendal neuralgia, endometriosis, vulvodynia, and persistent pain in the lower back, hips, or sacroiliac joints.

Oncology and Post-Surgical Care: Rehabilitation following surgeries like hysterectomies, fibroid removals, and recovery from pelvic cancers affecting the prostate, bladder, cervix, ovaries, or colon, as well as skin conditions such as Lichen Sclerosis.
