Mira Costa High Jazz Band took first place at a Jazz Festival

In the Large Ensemble Category, the Grammy Award-winning Mira Costa Jazz 1 band took first place at the esteemed 5th Annual National Jazz Festival in Philadelphia.

At the prestigious 5th Annual National Jazz Festival, which took place in Philadelphia, the Grammy Award-winning Mira Costa Jazz 1 band won first place in the Large Ensemble Category.

68 groups from 50 different schools around the nation participated in the festival. Some of the biggest universities in the country were competitors and stage partners for the MCHC Jazz Band. Mira Costa Bands director Joel Carlson was amazed by the sheer number of ensembles from all across the nation that were crammed into the Philadelphia Convention Center, both acoustically and visually.

The event aims to foster an environment where students are more inspired by one another than by competitiveness.

MCHS Jazz was performing at this festival for the first time; it was founded in 2020. However, Mira Costa pupils have already displayed their abilities in comparable settings. The Boston-based Berklee High School Jazz Festival, which used to hold the title of the largest and oldest jazz festival in America, served as the model for the National Jazz Festival. In 2017, Mira Costa's Jazz 1 went on tour to play at the Berklee Festival.

Individual Mira Costa musicians were also recognized and feted for their extraordinary abilities during the National Jazz Festival.
