The president of CBS News, Chief Neeraj Khemlani, announced on Sunday that he is stepping down from his role.
Neeraj Khemlani, president and co-head of CBS News, who has been in charge of the Tiffany Network's news section and local TV stations for slightly over a two-year period, abruptly announced his resignation on Sunday.
In order to create programming for the network, such as documentaries, scripted programs, and books for Simon & Schuster, Khemlani claimed he had inked a multi-year, multi-platform first look contract with CBS.
Although Wendy McMahon, who held the same position as president and co-head of CBS News and TV stations as Khemlani did, is thought to be a potential replacement, no one has yet been named.
In a different message to personnel, CBS CEO George Cheeks lauded Khemlani and promised to notify them "soon" about the division's new leadership and organizational structure.
The president of CBS News is in charge of well-known newscasts like "60 Minutes," "CBS Sunday Morning," "Face the Nation," and "Evening News."
While CBS News consistently outperforms its rivals on Sundays, the network has been unable to overtake NBC and ABC with its daily programming, despite an increase in ratings under Khemlani.
During his time there, Khemlani increased the number of reporters at CBS News, drawing respected writers like Cecilia Vega and Robert Costa to the organization.
The third network news director to leave in 2023 is Khemlani. After a tumultuous tenure, Chris Licht was ousted from CNN earlier this year, while Noah Oppenheim left NBC News in January.
