Ancient Saber-Toothed Cat Mummy Found in Siberia: A Science and Technology Breakthrough

Using advanced science and technology, scientists in Russia have discovered a 37,000 year old mummified saber toothed cat cub which provides new insights into Ice Age animals.

In an astounding turn of events, prospectors looking for gold in Eastern Siberia have found the frozen carcass of a saber-toothed kitten that was killed 37000 years ago, facilitating a unique view of a past era referred to as Ice Age. The carcass of the animal was discovered sticking out from the frozen river bank of Badyarikha in the year 2020 and has left many scientists and paleontologists across the globe speechless.

This announcement appearing in the Scientific Reports indicates sabre tooth tiger has once again been studied after 28,000 years but for different reasons. Excavations carried out by the Siberian Branch of the Russian academy of Sciences included CT scans which offered allowed their research subject to be identified as Homotherium, an extinct feline species. This is also the earliest Pleistocene mummy found to be composed of completely extinct animal families.

The frozen cub, believed to be three weeks old, had skin covered in flesh. Paleontologist Alexey Lopatin noted that its anatomy matched predictions, with a strong neck and round paws. The surprising discovery was its dark soft brown fur, important for understanding the evolution of the saber-tooth cat.

The discovery shows how modern science, like molecular genetics and imaging techniques, has transformed our understanding of extinct creatures. Research teams are hopeful that further studies will reveal more about this ancient predator.
