IMEI tampering triggers serious legal consequences as Indian telecom authorities step up measures against mobile device manipulation. According to CIO Bulletin, the Department of Telecommunications has warned smartphone users, manufacturers of devices, as well as mobile phone subscribers that tampering with digital hardware number codes constitutes breaking the law in the country. As per the Telecommunications Act 2023, any individual who tampers with device numbers or obtains SIM cards fraudulently shall be liable for serious criminal charges. It is important to note that tampering with device numbers poses security threats globally.

The government also issued a warning that illegal tampering with devices is a punishable offense, punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment, heavy fines to the tune of fifty lakh rupees, or both. Such offenses are considered cognizable and non-bailable in nature. Any assistance or promotion of such acts is also punishable with the same penalties.

According to official statements from the Ministry of Communications:

"Violations may attract imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to ₹50 lakh, or both. Such offences are cognizable and non-bailable under Section 42(7) of the Act."

How can ordinary smartphone buyers make sure their phones are completely genuine? Digital safety experts advise checking equipment records before buying secondhand smartphones. Everyday mobile subscribers must also avoid handing over SIM cards registered in their names to unknown third parties, as loaning or renting phone connections makes original account owners directly liable for cybercrimes. The government urges citizens to use the official digital verification portal, Sanchar Saathi, to check handset authenticity instantly.
