IBM launches a new geospatial AI project

IBM, a Global technology leader has launched a new project using advanced AI models to combat climate change, involving collaboration across various geographical areas.

Global technology leader IBM has unveiled its most recent geographical artificial intelligence (AI) project aimed at combating climate change. These projects leverage cutting-edge AI models created for geospatial applications and entail cooperation between different geographical areas.

The geospatial foundation model that IBM created in collaboration with NASA is the cornerstone of these endeavors. The goal of these models is to produce climate change-related environmental insights and solutions. In contrast to conventional AI models, these leverage massive amounts of climate-relevant data to speed up the research of different environmental factors impacted by climate change.

AI foundation models using geospatial data can be a game-changer, enabling them to better understand and address climate-related catastrophes with previously unheard-of speed and efficiency, according to Alessandro Curioni, IBM fellow and vice president of Accelerated Discovery.

Using an improved version of IBM's geospatial foundation model, the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and IBM have teamed to map urban heat islands in Abu Dhabi. According to the firm, the project's objective is to comprehend how local landforms affect temperature anomalies. The preliminary findings indicate a reduction in the consequences of heat islands, which can offer important information for next urban planning techniques.
