India warns IT companies about inaction on deepfakes

Following a warning by a well-known figure about a deepfake advertisement using his likeness to endorse a gaming app, India has informed tech companies that it is ready to impose bans if they do not take proactive measures against deepfake videos, a senior government minister said.

The severe warning is being issued as New Delhi acts upon its November caution regarding upcoming rules to identify and prevent the spread of fake media. The country's IT rules will be changed by the ministry by next week, according to deputy IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in order to provide clear legislation that would combat deepfakes. He voiced his displeasure with the digital giants' compliance with past government advice regarding manipulative content.

Chandrasekhar stated at a press conference that the Indian government has the authority to protect its citizens by blocking such platforms if they believe they can get away with not removing deepfake videos or just keeping a casual attitude toward them.

According to Chandrasekhar, the ministry has told IT companies up front that they risk legal repercussions from New Delhi if they don't successfully stop deepfakes. He declared, "It is unacceptable for companies to hide behind claims of 'best effort' while allowing these fabrications to spread." Deepfake content is hazardous and illegal.
