Indian auto retail sales achieved a 25.05 percent month-on-month surge in October 2026, marking the country's second-highest October volume on record as pre-festive buying and a 51 percent positive dealer outlook set up strong momentum for November deliveries.
India's auto sector had a very strong sequential rebound in October 2026 with pre-festive buying and consistent demand across the regional markets. Registrations came in 25.05% higher than in September and were the second best October on record according to FADA data. The month on month growth is quite impressive and clearly reflects strong consumer interest. The overall Indian auto retail sales for the month were 31.72 lakh units which is a very solid figure to come in for the month of October, particularly given the very high statistical base on a year on year basis due to the shift in the festive calendar.
The sequential growth across the vehicle segments is a clear indication of strong retail demand. Showroom visits were up across the board. Key category highlights from the monthly registration data include:
Two wheelers up nearly 30% Mom, driven by strong urban conversions and the initial pickup in rural demand.
Commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors all hit their highest October volumes to date, driven by increased infrastructure activity and fleet upgrades.
Industry people pointed out that the year on year numbers looked lower as Diwali had moved into November this year, but the underlying level of consumer demand is absolutely still there.
Describing the market movement as a calendar-driven shift rather than structural cooling, FADA President Sai Giridhar stated: "To our mind this is the signature of demand deferred by the festival calendar, not demand destroyed."
Automotive dealerships in both the major metros and the rural towns were able to maintain their inventory levels to meet the incoming bookings during the Dhanteras period.
Clean mobility solutions carried on with their rapid expansion and provided a real boost to overall retail volumes. Operational factors bolstering dealer performance include:
Electric vehicle registrations hit a record high of 3.55 lakh, representing around 11.5% of total vehicle sales.
Passenger vehicle channel inventory stabilized between 43 to 45 days, with dealers expecting stocks to normalize following major festive dispatches.
Looking ahead, dealership networks remain highly confident about sustaining operational momentum through the remainder of the final quarter. Over 51 percent of surveyed automobile dealers expect positive growth in November as festive deliveries culminate and regional wedding seasons begin. CIO Bulletin views this development as a very clear indicator of underlying consumer strength and that will continue to drive growth in the automotive retail network through the end of the year.
