General Motors is laying off 1,300 worker

According to WARN notices General Motors have sent to state regulators, informing them that about 1,300 workers will be let go from two of its Michigan operations.

Approximately 1,300 employees of General Motors will be let go from two of its Michigan operations; the firm has notified state regulators through WARN notices.

Job losses are scheduled for January at GM's Orion Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly. This comes after the carmaker announced in October that it would be postponing the manufacturing of electrified pickup trucks until 2025.

There will be 945 layoffs at GM's Orion facility, while 369 employees at the Lansing assembly plant will also be let go.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV are two more electric vehicles that GM plans to construct at the Orion factory in addition to the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV crossover. However, the business declared in October that it would be postponing the commencement of production, ensuring the workers' fate throughout the plant's idle period.

In October, General Motors stated that the recent United Auto Workers strike — the longest in US auto history — was not the cause of the delay. The GM layoffs are a reflection of the increasing unpredictability surrounding the electric car market. According to Edmunds.com, EV discounts have been rising as a result of their prolonged unsold status on dealer lots relative to gas-powered automobiles. This suggests a decrease in demand for what was thought to be a growing market in the previous years.
