Mercedes-Benz switches to the North American Charging Standard

The latest to switch over to Tesla’s popularized charging standard is Mercedes-Benz, moving from CCS to NACS.

Mercedes-Benz has declared that it will switch from the CCS (Combined Charging System) to the NACS (North American Charging Standard) style plug made popular by Tesla. This company is the latest to have switched over, following Ford's unexpected announcement in late May.

Mercedes-Benz now joins other brands offering NACS, including Rivian, Polestar, Volvo, and Aptera. Mercedes-Benz will gain access to Tesla’s 12,000 DC fast charging stalls with the switch to the new plug. Access to the Supercharger network will begin in 2024, but the brand will integrate the NACS connector by 2025. Mercedes-Benz EVs of the current generation will be able to connect to the Supercharger network using an adapter.

Mercedes-Benz claims that the move to NACS will raise the level of service and give its drivers access to more charging stations.

Mercedes-Benz does not, however, intend to stop making investments in its own charging infrastructure. By the end of 2023, the brand's global network, known as the Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging Network, is expected to have its first charging stations operational. By the end of the decade, Mercedes hopes to have more than 400 charging hubs and 2,500 high-power DC fast charging stations operational. Both CCS and NACS plugs will be present in the first charging stations. The brand wants its network to have at least 10,000 charging stations and more than 2,000 charging hubs worldwide.
