CBD Compounds Show Promise in Fighting Deadly Fungal Infections, Says Australian Study

A study from Australia reveals that CBD compounds work very well against dangerous fungal infections which could lead to quicker and safer plant-based treatments.

Macquarie University has recently found that some cannabis compounds, mainly CBD and CBDV, are effective in killing fungi. Cannabinoids were effective in fighting Cryptococcus neoformans which the WHO recognizes as a serious respiratory pathogen.

In a study released in The Journal of Neglected Tropical Diseases, CBD and CBDV were found to inhibit fungal growth in the lab and also worked faster than standard treatments. Scientists tested the substances on 33 fungal species and found that athlete’s foot and similar fungal skin infections could be targeted with them.

Dr. Hue Dinh and other members of Macquarie’s School of Natural Science joined UNSW and University of Sydney experts in this field. The team decided to attempt to repurpose existing CBD-containing drugs instead of creating brand-new antifungal medications, mainly because it would take many years to develop new drugs and fungal infections need quick solutions.

Research has discovered that CBD’s ability to combat fungal infections may revolutionize antifungal treatments and face up to the challenges of drug-resistant organisms.
