CBD for Managing Anxiety in Women

Pioneering Research Unveils CBD’s Potential to Alleviate Scan-Related Anxiety Without Side Effects

A recent Phase II clinical trial highlights the potential of cannabidiol (CBD) as a safe and effective option for reducing anxiety in women with advanced breast cancer. Published in JAMA Network Open, the study sheds light on CBD’s ability to address pre-scan anxiety, a pressing concern for cancer patients.

Cancer-related anxiety affects nearly 25% of patients, with pre-scan stress peaking in up to 81%. Traditional medications like benzodiazepines often come with severe side effects, including confusion and dependency. In contrast, CBD is known for its natural calming properties and lack of neuropsychiatric risks, making it a promising alternative.

The trial involved 50 women aged 57 to 60, all experiencing clinical anxiety. Participants were divided into two groups, one receiving 400 mg of oral CBD and the other a placebo, two to four hours before a tumor assessment scan. Anxiety was measured using the Visual Analog Mood Scale (VAMS).

Although the study didn’t achieve its primary outcome, it revealed that CBD effectively reduced anxiety in the most distressed patients. Importantly, no severe side effects were reported, reinforcing CBD’s strong safety profile.

Experts emphasize the need for larger, focused trials to explore CBD's efficacy further, particularly in cancer patients with moderate to severe anxiety. As CBD gains attention for its therapeutic potential in oncology, this research paves the way for safer, non-addictive anxiety relief options.
