A Groundbreaking Clinical Trial Offers Hope for Comfort in Advanced Dementia

As Kentucky gears up for the 2025 launch of legalized medical marijuana, researchers at the University of Kentucky’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging are making strides in understanding its potential benefits for advanced dementia patients. Led by Dr. Greg Jicha, the team is six months into a clinical trial exploring marijuana's impact on dementia with agitation, and the preliminary results are remarkable.

“The findings are astounding,” Dr. Jicha shared. “We’re seeing increased comfort and a reduced reliance on medications with harmful side effects.”

Despite the promising data, a critical challenge remains: the need for more trial participants. With medical marijuana legislation set to take effect on January 1, 2025, Dr. Jicha hopes the changing legal landscape will encourage Kentuckians to step forward. “We need dozens, if not hundreds, of participants willing to help us change the world,” he urged, addressing both patients and caregivers.

Notably, while Kentucky’s medical marijuana law excludes Alzheimer’s and dementia from its approved list of conditions, Dr. Jicha believes this research could spark future policy changes. “This study could demonstrate nationally that medical marijuana is a viable treatment, pushing Kentucky to expand its legislation,” he explained.

Dr. Jicha clarified that while marijuana won’t reverse or halt dementia’s progression, it offers a vital chance to enhance patients’ comfort. “Our mission as doctors is to provide peace and ease, even if we can’t yet cure,” he emphasized. “Someday, we’ll conquer Alzheimer’s, but until then, we aim to bring comfort to those who need it most.”
