Costa Rica Medical Cannabis Exports Rise

A first shipment to Europe and a brand-new manufacturing lab show the industry is racing ahead, but the pharmacy shelf is the real test.

Costa Rica medical cannabis exports have finally begun, and the country is moving fast to build a full industry around them. Yet while foreign buyers receive shipments, many patients at home are still waiting for easy access at the pharmacy.

A First Shipment Crosses the Atlantic

On March 13, 2026, a company called Hybrida Farms sent the first legal medical cannabis export from Costa Rica to the European Union. The shipment was pharmaceutical-grade and carried a GACP certificate, a quality mark for how medicinal plants are grown. For a country best known for bananas and pineapples, it was a bold new chapter.

Making the Medicine at Home

Growing the plant is only half the story. In late August, Vantage Point Global opened a laboratory in El Guarco, Cartago, which it calls the country’s first dedicated to making medical cannabis products. The site is designed to turn locally grown cannabis into oils, concentrates, syrups and tablets.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Costa Rica opened regulated medical cannabis sales in June 2025.

  • The market is projected to pass $35 million a year.

  • Patients need a doctor’s digital prescription.

  • Products with THC or CBD are sold only at approved pharmacies.

Why Are Patients Still Waiting?

That is the big question. Under the law, a licensed doctor must examine the patient and issue an electronic prescription before any product can be bought. Yet distribution remains limited, and the rules are strict. Dr. Carlos Hernández Cuevas, a San José physician, said medical cannabis is now “officially recognized as a therapeutic tool.” Will that recognition soon turn into real shelves stocked with locally made medicine?

What Comes Next for the Industry

The next test is whether cannabis becomes mainly a specialised farm export or a source of medicine for Costa Ricans too. Europe is a major buyer, and Germany alone imported over 201 tonnes of medical cannabis in 2025. CIO Bulletin will keep following Costa Rica medical cannabis exports as new licences, labs and shipments emerge.
