Cabinet Secretary directs central ministries and state governments to align digital infrastructure with stringent privacy protocols, setting strict timelines for administrative compliance nationwide.
CIO Bulletin reports that India's Cabinet Secretary has issued a direct mandate to all central ministries, departments, and state governments regarding Digital Personal Data Protection Act compliance. The top administrative official emphasized that government institutions processing citizen data must establish robust techno-legal safeguards, update privacy notices, and strictly align public service delivery systems with statutory data governance frameworks.
The high-level instruction pertains to the considerable volume of personal data that is collected by government organizations while carrying out their usual activities of citizen services. In this revised policy initiative, the government organizations that function as data fiduciaries need to conduct an audit of their data management practices, institute consent procedures, and make sure that their citizens can use their privacy rights without any problem.
Highlighting the importance of responsible data management across administrative sectors, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S. Krishnan noted:
"The framework focuses on responsible data governance and compliance-by-design to safeguard citizens' privacy while building a secure digital ecosystem."
Can public sector institutions manage to follow such rigid compliance time frames and still continue to function effectively in their daily activities through the large-scale digital infrastructure? Some special training courses have been arranged by the authorities to make the process easier.
Administrative Directive: The cabinet secretary directs all governmental agencies to expedite compliance in the field of data privacy.
Safeguards of Techno-Law: Public sites must incorporate strict security standards and privacy disclosures.
Data Subject's Rights: The mandate guarantees that citizens can exercise their rights of access, correction, and revocation of consent.
Accountability Officers: Governmental departments are required to appoint accountability officers.
While the state governments are conducting an auditing exercise on their digital infrastructure, the central government will keep checking the progress to ensure consistency nationwide.
