FIFA Council Advances Compliance and Governance Decisions

The FIFA Council meeting in Zurich approved important compliance and governance committees, declared new committees, and confirmed a new update of world football competition.

The FIFA Council convened in Zurich on October 2, 2025 and passed important resolutions on football compliance and governance, competitions and engagement with the stakeholders.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stressed the importance of football as a source of unity in the face of the conflict in the world, especially in the case of Gaza. He emphasized that FIFA should not solve any geopolitical conflicts, but it can encourage peace and unity via the cultural and humanitarian values of the sport.

Governance issues were also mentioned in the Council, with potential risks generated by organizations not functioning within the pyramid model of football. Infantino reaffirmed FIFA's commitment to player protection, maintaining balance in club and national team football, and upholding governance standards across the sport.

Another significant result was the election into FIFA of the new Standing Dakotas of the 2025-2029 cycles, which were intended to improve decision-making and increase female involvement as well as technical savvy. The meeting was chaired by Bruno Chiomento, the chair of the Governance, Audit, and Compliance Committee, where FIFA has returned to transparency.

Additional amendments involved the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 to record success, London deciding to be a host to the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup 2026, and Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan hosting the U-20 World Cup 2027.
