Former NBCUniversal executive Chris Berend joins Hearst Magazines in a newly established role to shape digital strategy and elevate multimedia engagement across major publishing brands.
Publishing giant Hearst Magazines recently named media veteran Chris Berend as its first Chief Content and Experience Officer. Starting in this new role on August 3, Berend will oversee the publisher’s global editorial direction, video efforts, and cross-platform programming. He will report directly to Hearst Magazines’ President Debi Chirichella. With this move, Hearst is attempting to integrate editorial authority with multi-channel digital experiences.
Berend brings extensive media background, having previously served as Chief Digital Officer at NBCUniversal News Group. His career trajectory includes senior digital positions across prominent global properties:
NBCUniversal & CNN: helped lead digital transformation, managed worldwide video operations, and also co-founded the award-winning Great Big Story idea.
Bloomberg, ESPN, & Esquire: drove digital growth strategies and originally began his media career at Esquire magazine.
This leadership addition reflects an ongoing trend among legacy publishers seeking to deepen consumer engagement across emerging channels.
"Chris brings a deep understanding of the editorial process, strong business leadership, and a track record of driving significant growth in both video and content experiences," - Debi Chirichella, President of Hearst Magazines.
Chirichella’s background positioning digital products alongside print heritage provides the foundation for scaling new audience touchpoints.
In his new capacity, Berend aims to align classic storytelling with modern consumer expectations.
"I'm especially drawn to helping evolve our iconic brands into modern, audience-driven businesses — building on their influence, authority and loyalty to drive innovation and creating new experiences that unlock growth," noted Berend during the official announcement.
His mandate focuses on accelerating video programming and interactive content ecosystems across the company's portfolio.
When companies bring content work and user experience under one roof, they can usually respond faster to what audiences do now. Linking digital product thinking with editorial operations also supports long-term brand relevance across web, social, and streaming venues. CIO Bulletin, for its part, sees this as a meaningful step that shows older publishing brands are reshaping leadership in order to push sustainable digital expansion.
