OpenEverest is an independent open-source release by Percona to support the development of automated database management and a governance structure contributed to by the community.
Percona announced the Percona Everest spinout into a separate open-source project called OpenEverest as well as the launch of a wholly owned subsidiary, Solanica, to accelerate development and the community. The relocation is a shift towards open governance in the dynamic database management environment.
OpenEverest is used as an open-source tool to provide automated database provisioning and database management in both current cloud and on-premise setups. Percona will achieve this by initiating a multi-vendor community model, which will enable it to engage more parties besides its organization and ensure that the roadmap of the project is based on the real-life database management requirements rather than the individual-vendor considerations.
Percona noted that it would still continue to be an actively participating member of OpenEverest as well as retain enterprise-quality support, consulting, and services. Solanica will concentrate on the development of the software and the ecosystem of the contributors only, contributing to the long-run sustainability of the database management users.
OpenEverest is designed to have an extensible platform where other developers can introduce their support of other databases and can be combined with broader data infrastructure tools. The determined succession to be in line with the cloud-native ecosystems was also detailed by the company, placing OpenEverest between the operations of infrastructure and day-to-day management tasks in databases.
Vice President of Product Management at Percona Blair Rampling argues that spinout levels the playing field to accelerate innovation, expand collaboration, and create a more open platform on which modern data platforms can be managed as well as ensure continuity to existing users of its services.
