Taiwan develops AI and unmanned systems defense technology to modernize military forces and fight new threats.
Taiwan is increasing its defense technology, and it has an intention to roll out AI and unmanned aerial system (UAS) innovation by 2025. The Ministry of National Defense, as set out in the National Defense Report 2025, has the Defense Innovation Office (DIO) in the vanguard of modernization.
The DIO intends to accelerate the incorporation of the civilian innovations in military service as reported by the Taipei Times. There are already three planned prototype defense technology projects listed that are planned in the coming year, such as an AI tool in satellite-based target recognition, an augmented-reality support system for soldiers, and a smart warehouse network to further improve logistics and supply efficiency.
Another effort that the ministry is pursuing to enhance operational preparedness is through small-scale acquisitions of UAS, counter-UAS technologies, and fire-control capabilities. This is a progressive procurement strategy whereby the troops would test and refine new defense technology tools before the actual deployment to the full scale.
Officials reckon that these developments will bridge major capability gaps, notably in counter-drone warfare and keep Taiwan forces afloat and ready to deal with emerging threats.
