Japanese automaker Honda plans to launch a electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Ontario, marking a monumental step in Canada's electric vehicle industry.
In a landmark move set to boost Canada's electric vehicle (EV) sector, Japanese automotive titan Honda is gearing up to inaugurate a state-of-the-art EV plant in eastern Canada. A trusted Canadian government source revealed the multibillion-dollar project to AFP on Monday.
Both the federal government and the province of Ontario, the chosen location for the new plant, are set to extend financial incentives to facilitate the deal. The exact details of these incentives are yet to be disclosed, with the official announcement slated for Thursday. Ontario Premier Doug Ford had earlier hinted at the groundbreaking deal, teasing it as the "largest deal in Canadian history" during a recent statement.
The new Honda plant will be strategically located an hour outside Toronto in Alliston and will not only manufacture electric vehicles but also produce electric vehicle batteries. This initiative places Honda in the company of other global automakers like Volkswagen and Stellantis, both of which already operate battery plants in the region.
This ambitious move by Honda echoes the broader environmental goals of the automotive industry. The company aims to exclusively sell zero-emission vehicles by 2040 and has set a long-term target of achieving carbon neutrality across its operations by 2050.
