Ambitious EV Policy 2.0 sparks hope for cleaner streets and greener wallets
In a bold move to reshape Delhi’s roads, the city’s government has unveiled its draft EV Policy 2.0, signaling the end of petrol-powered two-wheelers and CNG autos. Approved by the cabinet, the policy sets a striking goal: 95% of new vehicle registrations must be electric by 2027. For Delhi’s riders, this shift promises lower fuel costs and a cleaner city, though challenges like range anxiety linger.
Picture the iconic Hero Splendor or Honda Activa, staples of India’s bustling streets, fading into history. From August 15, 2025, registering petrol or CNG vehicles will be impossible in Delhi. Existing internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers face an uncertain future, with questions swirling about how long they can legally ride. Even the CNG-powered Bajaj Freedom, launched just last year, feels the heat.
The policy doesn’t stop there. CNG autos, a lifeline for public transport, will lose permit renewals after the deadline, pushing drivers toward electric conversions. To ease the transition, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa told PTI the city will roll out widespread charging stations, battery-swapping hubs, and recycling programs. Partnerships with schools aim to grow the EV ecosystem further.
For Delhiites, EV Policy 2.0 offers a chance to slash maintenance bills and breathe easier. If charging networks expand and bikes deliver better range, the city’s electric dream could become a vibrant reality.
