French Curfews Bring Quiet Night After Weekend of Riots

Targeted restrictions in Paris and major cities help restore order as officials review further measures

French curfews imposed across several cities delivered a largely peaceful night after a weekend of riots and looting that shook the country. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed the measures worked, giving credit to police and local officials who enforced them.

Curfews covered key spots in central Paris, including Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district. Similar limits on movement, especially for young people, and bans on gatherings were put in place in Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, Lille and other towns.

Lecornu wrote on X that decisions on further restrictions for Tuesday night would be made “on the ground” by regional authorities and mayors, based on local needs. He thanked the officers and gendarmes who kept the streets quiet.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had earlier admitted that police “lost control” in some cities during the unrest. He offered his resignation on Monday, but President Emmanuel Macron turned it down.

Officials reported more than 2,500 arrests since the trouble began. Roughly 1,000 police officers were injured. One protester lost a hand after a police crowd-control grenade exploded, according to the AFP news agency.

The protests started last month with students calling for better school conditions. They later grew to include trade unions and other groups raising wider concerns about living costs and public services.

As the clean-up continues and authorities watch the situation closely, CIO Bulletin notes that the calm overnight offers a moment of relief for residents and businesses hit by the violence. Further curfews remain possible where needed, while the government continues to assess the damage and the response.

The coming days will show whether the targeted approach keeps the peace or if stronger measures become necessary.
