Recognition of true excellence in dental business coaching carries weight far beyond any single honor. When the profession pauses to identify those who consistently help practices grow stronger, more profitable, and more humane, it elevates the entire field. Outstanding coaches do more than share advice; they restore hope, reclaim time, and rebuild confidence for dentists who feel stretched thin by the daily demands of running a practice. Their work shapes not only individual careers but the future of independent dentistry itself. In that spirit of meaningful leadership, one organization continues to stand out for the depth of its guidance and the tangible results it delivers.
ACT Dental has built its reputation on a simple yet powerful conviction: every successful dental practice should operate under proven best practices, and the right coach makes the difference between surviving and truly thriving. For years the company has partnered with dentists who want more than clinical skill. They want practices that run smoothly, teams that stay engaged, and lives that feel balanced again. ACT’s coaches bring real-world experience, practical systems, and a steady focus on both profitability and personal well-being. The result is a partnership that helps owners create a better practice and a better life at the same time.
Restoring Clarity When Burnout Threatens
Many dentists reach a point where the joy of helping patients is overshadowed by exhaustion. Long days, constant pressure, and the weight of leadership can quietly drain energy and enthusiasm. ACT coaches meet this reality head-on. They help practice owners clarify a genuine vision for the future and set strategic goals that feel both ambitious and achievable. Together they develop practical ways to manage stress, protect personal time, and install efficient systems that reduce unnecessary friction. Time-management skills improve, daily operations become more predictable, and the sense of constant urgency begins to fade. What remains is a career that feels sustainable and, once again, rewarding.
Strengthening Financial Foundations in a Changing Landscape
Financial pressure remains one of the most persistent challenges facing dental practices. Reduced reimbursements from preferred-provider organizations, rising overhead, and the lingering burden of educational debt can shrink margins and increase worry. ACT coaches examine a practice’s numbers with clear eyes, identifying leaks and opportunities that owners often miss in the rush of clinical work. They guide teams through the complexities of insurance participation, help reduce write-offs, and introduce strategies that improve cash flow without sacrificing patient care. The focus is always practical: create greater financial margin so that debt becomes manageable, retirement feels possible, and the practice generates the income its owners deserve. In the process, many dentists discover they can work fewer days while earning more, a shift that changes both the balance sheet and the quality of life.
Building Teams That Stay and Practices That Stand Out
Hiring and keeping capable team members has grown increasingly difficult. Competition from larger organizations and the general strain of the labor market leave many independent practices struggling to attract and retain talent. ACT coaches address this challenge by helping owners put the right people in the right seats and then create a culture that makes those people want to stay. Training, clear communication, and thoughtful engagement practices turn a group of individuals into a cohesive team. At the same time, coaches equip practices with systems that strengthen every area of operations, from patient experience to marketing and daily workflows. These systems allow independent practices to differentiate themselves in a marketplace increasingly influenced by dental service organizations. By sharpening unique strengths and delivering consistent excellence, practices become more resilient and more attractive to both patients and staff.
Beyond one-on-one coaching, ACT has created The Community Hub, a gathering place designed specifically for dental professionals who refuse to face challenges alone. The Hub offers role-specific groups where dentists, hygienists, and team members can exchange real solutions with peers who understand their daily realities. A growing resource library supplies practical tools covering leadership, profitability, patient experience, and communication. Continuing-education opportunities and coach-led virtual study clubs bring structured learning and accountability within reach of the entire team. Membership also unlocks preferential pricing and partnerships that often more than cover the cost of participation. Whether a dentist chooses a lighter membership focused on self-guided growth or a more intensive option that includes live coaching and peer groups, the Hub provides connection, knowledge, and shared momentum that few practices can generate in isolation.
The Path Ahead
The dentists who work with ACT often describe the same transformation. Practices that once felt chaotic become orderly. Teams that once struggled with turnover begin to thrive. Owners who once measured success only in production numbers start measuring it in free evenings, restored energy, and renewed pride in their work. These outcomes do not arrive by chance. They grow from consistent application of best practices, honest examination of numbers and culture, and the steady presence of coaches who understand both the business and the human side of dentistry.
ACT’s approach remains deliberately personal. No two practices face identical circumstances, so no two coaching relationships follow an identical script. Coaches listen first, diagnose carefully, and then guide owners through the specific changes that will produce lasting results. The goal is never simply higher production. It is a practice that supports the life its owner wants to live, a team that feels valued, and a future that feels secure rather than uncertain.
In a profession that continues to face pressure from every direction, the value of experienced, results-driven coaching has never been clearer. ACT continues to prove that with the right guidance, dentists can reduce burnout, strengthen finances, build durable teams, and reclaim both time and purpose. The practices that partner with ACT do more than survive current challenges; they emerge more capable, more profitable, and more human. For any dentist ready to move from constant struggle to steady progress, that partnership offers a clear and proven path forward.
Dr. Barrett Straub | CEO
Dr. Barrett Straub is the CEO of Smile Source, a community of independent dentists working together to protect and grow private practice dentistry. A dentist by training and an advocate for dentists at heart, Barrett brings a deep respect for the profession and a personal understanding of the challenges that come with running a private practice.
For almost 20 years, Barrett owed a fee-for-service general and sedation practice in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Like many of his peers, he worked hard to build a practice that reflected his values and served his community well. Along the way, he developed a passion for leadership, team development, and the kind of business strategies that help great dentists succeed on their own terms.
He's a graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry and has trained with institutions like the Spear Institute, LVI, DOCS, and the Seattle Study Club. In 2017, Marquette honored him as their Young Alumnus of the Year. He has served in organized dentistry within the Wisconsin Dental Association as a Board of Trustees member and at the ADA level as a House Delegate and a member of the Council on Governmental Affairs.
Outside of work, Barrett lives in Wisconsin with his wife, Katie, and their two daughters, Abby and Elizabeth. He's a big fan of the outdoors, loves to be in a tree stand deer hunting, a decent golfer on good days, and a curler during the long Midwest winters.
