Downtown FabWorks – Redefining Experiential Fabrication Through Craft, Technology, and Creative Precision

A powerful exhibit does more than occupy a room. It invites people to pause, look closer, connect with a story, and leave with something they did not have before. Behind every memorable museum environment, immersive installation, or carefully crafted public space is a combination of imagination, technical skill, precision, and an understanding of how people experience places. The companies shaping these environments play an important role in turning ideas into physical experiences that educate, inspire, and stay with audiences long after they leave.

That responsibility requires far more than simply building attractive structures. It calls for partners who can understand a vision, solve complex fabrication challenges, respect the meaning behind a story, and deliver every detail with care. Downtown FabWorks has built its reputation around exactly that approach, bringing together design, craftsmanship, technology, and collaboration to create environments that people can experience, explore, and remember.

Where Creativity Meets Craftsmanship

Founded in the fall of 2019 by Daniel Krall, Downtown FabWorks was created with a straightforward but ambitious vision: bring highly skilled professionals from different trades together under one roof and use their combined expertise to solve complex fabrication challenges. Drawing on two decades of experience spanning exhibits, broadcast television, construction, and events, Krall established the company as a custom fabrication partner capable of turning ambitious concepts into practical, high-quality realities.

The company launched just before the world entered an unprecedented period of uncertainty in 2020. Rather than allowing those circumstances to define its future, Downtown FabWorks continued building on its foundation of thematic architectural fabrication while developing its capabilities in scenic fabrication. As the business grew, its two areas of expertise evolved into dedicated Architectural and Scenic divisions, allowing each team to focus on the distinct requirements of its projects while maintaining the collaborative spirit that defines the company.

Today, a team of more than 40 professionals brings together diverse trades, fabrication techniques, technical knowledge, and creative perspectives. Their work extends across live events, broadcast television, brand activations, immersive exhibits, themed entertainment, museums, zoos, aquariums, restaurants, retail spaces, theme parks, public art, and the big screen.

At the heart of the company is a simple belief: great fabrication is not only about what gets built, but also about how it is built. Downtown FabWorks treats every assignment as a partnership, working closely with clients to understand their ideas, goals, challenges, and expectations.

Turning Vision into Physical Experience

Downtown FabWorks offers an end-to-end fabrication process that begins with understanding an idea and continues through design, production, finishing, delivery, and installation. Its in-house technical design team plays an important role at the beginning of that journey, transforming concepts into workable plans while identifying the right methods and materials for successful fabrication.

Precision is central to the process. The company’s CNC capabilities allow its skilled operators to work with materials including wood, high-density urethane, acrylic, aluminum, and steel. This technology combines speed and accuracy with hands-on expertise, helping ensure that components meet exact requirements while staying on schedule and within budget.

Traditional craftsmanship remains equally important. Its millwork capabilities bring together entertainment construction methods, cabinet-making knowledge, and custom woodworking across a broad range of materials. Its metalworking team adds another layer of technical expertise, with certified professionals experienced in MIG, TIG, and stick welding. Whether working with steel, aluminum, or stainless steel, the team is equipped to handle demanding fabrication requirements.

Its prop-making expertise adds another dimension. Scenic artists create custom, life-sized pieces from materials such as foam, HDU board, and castings, turning ideas into three-dimensional storytelling elements. Meanwhile, AV and lighting integration enables technology to become part of the fabrication itself rather than feeling like an afterthought. The result is a more cohesive, intentional, and engaging experience.

Building Exhibits That Carry Meaning

For museum and exhibit projects, fabrication carries a unique responsibility. The finished environment must not only look impressive but also support the story it has been designed to tell. Every material, surface, structure, and interactive element can influence how visitors understand and connect with that story.

Downtown FabWorks’ Architectural division brings together designers, project managers, carpenters, metalworkers, CNC technicians, and finishers to create spaces that encourage people to connect, explore, and discover. From educational displays and themed environments to immersive exhibits, the team approaches each project with an appreciation for both visual impact and long-term durability.

One particularly meaningful example is the Tate, Etienne, and Prevost Interpretive Center, located inside the historic McDonogh 19 Elementary School. For the center’s first permanent museum exhibit, Downtown FabWorks partnered on the fabrication and installation of “The Principal’s Office,” an exhibit that tells the story of the McDonogh Three, the six-year-old girls who entered the school in 1960 despite facing hostile crowds and became part of the history of school desegregation in Louisiana.

Projects such as this demonstrate the deeper purpose of exhibit fabrication. The physical environment becomes a bridge between visitors and history. Carefully constructed spaces can give important stories a presence that words alone cannot provide, helping audiences understand not only what happened, but also the courage, emotion, and human experience behind it.

A Partner Built for Extraordinary Challenges

Downtown FabWorks’ capabilities are broad, but its greatest strength may be the way those capabilities come together. The company brings production design, technical design, project management, fabrication, finishing, logistics, and installation into a collaborative process. Its installation team can transform spaces into immersive environments, while its trucking capabilities support projects across the continental United States.

That end-to-end approach also gives clients a single partner capable of managing the many moving parts involved in complex builds. Whether the project is a permanent museum installation, an immersive brand activation, a themed environment, a major event, or a broadcast production, the company remains focused on delivering the intended experience without losing sight of practical realities such as deadlines, budgets, quality, and installation.

Downtown FabWorks also understands that no two projects are exactly alike. Its team welcomes unusual challenges and niche requirements, drawing on a wide range of skills to find solutions when conventional approaches are not enough. That adaptability is particularly valuable in a creative industry where the most exciting ideas often begin with a problem that has never been solved in quite the same way before.

Ultimately, Downtown FabWorks is built around people who believe that good work should lead to excellent experiences. Its story is one of bringing diverse skills together, turning bold ideas into tangible environments, and treating every project as something personally worth getting right. By combining technical precision with genuine craftsmanship and a deeply collaborative approach, the company continues to show what is possible when fabrication becomes more than construction and becomes a form of storytelling.

“We pride ourselves on combining diverse skills and unique perspectives to solve our clients' toughest challenges. To us, it's not just about building things; it’s about building something better.”
