Illusion was founded in 2011 by Rory Evans and Dan Hughes after meeting while studying for a BA (Hons) in Scenic Construction. United by a lifelong passion for bold, ambitious work, they set out to build a forward-thinking organization grounded in creativity, collaboration, and uncompromising quality.
From humble beginnings in a borrowed workshop, their focus was simple: to transform complex ideas into considered, well-crafted physical environments through thoughtful design and a deep understanding of how things are made. That mindset continues to shape the company’s approach today. It works collaboratively with client teams from the earliest stages, developing ideas through design thinking and technical insight in parallel. By keeping ambition closely connected to delivery, complex concepts can be explored with clarity, tested rigorously, and realized as immersive environments built to perform.
With Illusion’s projects growing in scale and complexity, so has its team and capability. Today, from its 2.7-acre site in Belvedere, South-East London, its team of thinkers and makers works as a full-service production partner, supporting ambitious and creative projects across every scale and lifespan, globally.

Illusion offers services across six categories, categorized into two verticals, namely creative thinkers and expert makers.
Direction & Management: Whether leading a project or supporting an existing team, the company can provide strategic direction and practical management throughout planning, coordination, and delivery. Design Studio: The Design Studio bridges imagination and delivery, shaping ideas through creative thinking, technical understanding, and real-world production knowledge. From ideation through to technical resolution, concepts are developed with a clear understanding of how they will be built, installed, and experienced. The Design Studio can operate as a standalone service or as part of a full production partnership, supporting projects through design alone or continuing through to build and delivery as required. Services provided are Concept & Ideation, Creative Design, Production-Informed Design, Technical Design, R&D, Sampling, and 3D Modeling.
Content: The company designs and produces content that integrates seamlessly with the built environment – shaping clear visual narratives and cohesive, fully realized experiences. Its role goes beyond supplying screens, projection or audio systems. It creates what lives within them – from AV design and motion content to holographic elements, visual effects and written narrative – ensuring every detail aligns with the creative intent. Services include Content Design, Content Production, AV & Media Design, Holograms & Visual Effects, Copy & Narrative Development, and Content Integration.
Construction: The engine behind the experience, a workshop built for the unbelievable. Built from the ground up, the company’s workshops bring ideas into physical form. Its in-house team of skilled craftspeople realizes each project with precision, care, and meticulous attention to detail. Working across permanent installations, touring productions, multi-use environments, and temporary experiences, the company adapts its approach to meet the needs of each project while maintaining the highest standards of finish and durability. Services offered include 3D Printing, CNC Machining, Carpentry, Metalwork, Engineering, Plastic Fabrication, Sculpting, Scenic Artistry, and Spray Finishing.
Technical Integration: Modern experiences demand more than physical build alone. Its technical teams integrate lighting, media, automation, and interactive systems to ensure environments function seamlessly as part of the wider experience. By developing technical solutions alongside design and construction, the company ensures systems work cohesively, installations run reliably, and creative intent is realized without compromise.
