NATROX Wound Care is on a mission to revolutionize healing for those with chronic wounds. Guided by passion for medicine, compassion for patients, and respect for its team, NATROX Wound Care is committed to transforming lives. At CIO Bulletin, we had the distinct honor of interviewing Nancy Stahulak, Vice-President of Global Marketing and U.S. Sales at NATROX Wound Care. She shared profound insights on how she and her company, with a clear purpose and unwavering commitment, are bringing relief where there is pain, restoring hope where it is fading, and giving every patient the chance to heal.

The Genesis of NATROX® Wound Care

Every breakthrough begins with a human story, and NATROX Wound Care is no exception. What started as a deeply personal mission has since grown into a pioneering force in advanced wound therapies.

The spark came from an act of compassion. Mel Vinton, one of the company’s inventors, watched his elderly aunt suffer unbearable pain from a venous leg ulcer that refused to heal. Conventional treatments offered little relief, leaving her trapped in daily agony. For Mel, this was not something to be accepted—he became determined to find a solution. His research led him to a powerful truth: oxygen is essential for healing. But the challenge was delivering it directly to wounds without pressure or chemicals that could worsen the condition.

With the help of colleagues at the University of Cambridge, this vision took shape. Together, they developed what would later become NATROX® O₂—a groundbreaking topical oxygen therapy that leverages the body’s own ally, oxygen, to stimulate natural healing safely and effectively.

The journey didn’t end there. In 2005, Inotec AMD Ltd. was founded by Alan Hurst, Mel Vinton, and Professor Derek Fray to bring this innovation from the university to the world. From one family’s struggle, NATROX Wound Care has grown into a company driven by a mission to transform wound healing for millions.

Reflecting on this origin, Nancy Stahulak, Vice-President of Global Marketing & U.S. Sales:

“NATROX Wound Care was born out of compassion and science working hand in hand. What began as one man’s quest to relieve his aunt’s suffering is now a global mission to improve the lives of patients with hard-to-heal wounds.”

The Power of NATROX® O₂: A Wearable Revolution in Wound Healing

NATROX Wound Care’s flagship product, NATROX O₂, is a discreet, wearable device that delivers the natural properties of oxygen, empowering patients in their wound-healing journey. It’s designed to continuously deliver topical oxygen directly to a wound to promote and enhance wound healing. Battery-powered, portable, and completely silent, the device is easy to manage and practical for everyday use, allowing patients to continue their normal daily activities. This low-flow tissue oxygenation system is intended as an adjunct to standard of care by providing the vital properties of oxygen to a wide range of chronic, non-healing wounds.

“There are myriads of wound care products – nothing new in years,” says Nancy Stahulak. “NATROX O₂ changes that by offering a non-invasive, user-friendly therapy that promotes faster healing, even in wounds present for years. It’s beneficial for healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers alike.”

Designed to fit seamlessly with existing clinical protocols, NATROX O₂ requires minimal training and can be used in conjunction with other advanced wound therapies. Unlike other oxygen delivery methods, which demand multiple clinic visits or tether patients to plugged-in devices, NATROX O₂ can be managed in multiple care settings, including at home.

The results speak for themselves. In the NATROX O₂ pain study:

  • 76% reported substantial pain reduction
  • 53% became pain-free
  • Average pain score dropped from 8.2 to 1.9 (0–10 scale)

The impact extends beyond physical healing. As Windy Cole, DPM, shared in the ‘Ask the Experts’ series:

“Living with a chronic wound is very demanding and can be somewhat restrictive – clinic appointments, dressing changes, testing – all of this dictates the patients’ lives and can take many hours out of their day. The fact that patients are mobile with Continuous Topical Oxygen Therapy is really huge. It’s less restrictive, it supports the patient’s ability to not only continue their activities of daily living – laundry and such – but they can also participate in their social interactions. This can have a considerable positive impact on our patients' psychological wellbeing. It can help to reduce feelings of depression, isolation, anxiety and stress, and increase their quality of life. Subsequently, it makes them more adherent to the treatment plan, so they get better results. It's a win-win for all involved.”

Convenience and access to care remain critical. As Dr. Cole further noted:

“Unfortunately, our patients have a lot of hurdles to access advanced wound care. There's a paucity of wound care-trained clinicians, especially in rural areas. Our patients are really sick. They tend to be of advanced age, they have limited mobility, and lack of transportation. They have some socioeconomic barriers that create obstacles to care in certain clinical settings.”

By bringing therapy into patients’ homes, NATROX O₂ helps ease this burden not just for patients, but also for caregivers. Learn more here: Healing Journeys Unveiled – Clinicians, Patients, and Caregivers Share the Power of NATROX® O₂

NATROX O₂’s Evidence-Backed Fight Against Chronic Wounds

Chronic wounds are often described as a “silent epidemic,” and with good reason. For millions of patients worldwide, the healing process is painfully slow—or doesn’t happen at all. NATROX O₂ is tackling this challenge head-on.

“Oxygen is required at every stage of wound healing,” says Nancy Stahulak. “Unfortunately, patients with hard-to-heal or chronic wounds often have conditions that reduce their body’s ability to deliver the oxygen required for healing, and the process stalls. For these patients, supplemental oxygen can help.”

She explains that many barriers delay wounds from healing, but one of the most critical is insufficient oxygen. In fact, 97% of chronic wounds are hypoxic. While many advanced wound products address other barriers, very few provide supplemental oxygen. That is where NATROX O₂ Continuous Topical Oxygen Therapy stands apart—by delivering 24/7 oxygen directly to the wound bed and filling the gap left in advanced wound care.

The impact of this therapy has been reinforced by clinical evidence, demonstrating how NATROX O₂ reduces both the human and economic burden of chronic wounds:Harnessing the Power of Oxygen

Improved healing rates: The healing process for a chronic wound can take 6 to 8 months or longer; some patients live with their wounds for 15 years or more. Faster healing and reduced clinical visits can significantly reduce wound care costs. Serena TE, Bullock NM, Cole W, et al. (2021); Cole W, Woodmansey E. (2023)

Durability: Wound recurrence is common, but 85% of NATROX O₂ patients remained healed at one year. Al-Jalodi O, Kupcella M, Breisinger K, et al. (2022)

Reduced risk of amputation: Amputation rates are significantly lower when Continuous Topical Oxygen Therapy is used in conjunction with standard of care. He S, Liang C, Yi C, et al. (2021)

Reduced use of/dependency on opioids: Continuous Topical Oxygen Therapy significantly reduced pain levels, leading to 69% of NATROX O₂ patients stopping the use of opioids. Jebril W, Nowak M, Palin L, et al. (2022)

For Nancy Stahulak, these results capture the heart of NATROX Wound Care’s mission: “We’re not just addressing the clinical problem of wounds that won’t heal—we’re alleviating the human suffering, the economic burden, and the systemic strain on healthcare. NATROX O₂ is about giving patients their lives back.”

Its recent registration in Mexico signifies another milestone. In the same vein, the company has secured reimbursement in approximately seven countries. Nancy Stahulak, notes: “As we get closer to national reimbursement in the U.S., we’re building up our brand awareness because the product is becoming more readily available, with coverage at the Veterans Health Administration, as well as some Managed Medicaid programs and commercial insurers in various states.”

As pioneers in the field of Topical Oxygen Therapy, the NATROX Wound Care team continues to push the boundaries of innovation. Clearly defined by the mission, “Everything we do begins and ends with the patient,” NATROX Wound Care places special emphasis on prioritizing patient well-being and keeps it at the forefront of all endeavors. Committed to healing, the company focuses on delivering wound care technology that works across the care continuum and that can transform patients’ lives.

The Road Ahead

Looking ahead in 2025 and beyond, the VP of Global Marketing  & U.S. Sales emphasizes how science continues to guide the company’s mission. “Recent advancements in the science of wound healing have shed new light on the mechanisms underlying NATROX O₂'s efficacy, paving the way for further optimization and customization of treatment protocols.”

These scientific insights are more than just milestones—they are catalysts for the future of wound healing. Building on this momentum, NATROX Wound Care is advancing research and clinical trials designed to expand the indications for NATROX O₂. “Ongoing research and clinical trials seek to expand the indications for NATROX O₂, opening doors to new possibilities in wound management,” concludes Nancy Stahulak.
