Acclaimed actor Tom Skerritt, known for iconic roles in Alien, Top Gun, and Picket Fences, passes away at 93, leaving behind a rich legacy spanning six decades of cinematic and television excellence.
Acclaimed American actor Tom Skerritt (93) has died at his home in Seattle. The family announced through a press release that he passed away from natural causes at his home, with his family around him. Tom Skerritt was a man with immense gravitas and inner strength. He was one of the most reliable and versatile character actors of his generation in Hollywood, with more than 170 movie and television appearances in over 60 years of his career. He used to be a member of the US Air Force before joining the acting career in the early 1960s.
Whether it is sci-fi movies or award-winning TV dramas, his repertoire was gigantic and immensely influential in the global entertainment industry. He was a very steady presence in a number of major Hollywood films and brought a great deal of gravitas to them through his sheer presence.
Playing the role of Captain Arthur Dallas in Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic movie Alien that premiered in 1979.
Role of Navy Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in the blockbuster action movie Top Gun (starring Tom Cruise) in 1986.
Playing the lead role of Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the popular television drama series Picket Fences (won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1993).
Reflecting on his appreciation for progressive storytelling throughout his career, Tom Skerritt once noted: “When I read the script, one of the things that I liked most about it was that the woman becomes the hero. I loved that. The sight of women being in positions of strength and fortitude to make the right connections and decisions was what appealed to me.”
The industry peers and colleagues from the movies that marked their generations have been expressing their tributes to his artistic contribution and professionalism on the sets.
Apart from his career as an actor in movies, he dedicated much of his later life to mentoring creative people and developing the media infrastructure of the Pacific Northwest. He founded Heyou Media (a media company in Seattle), which was very much a vehicle for supporting independent filmmakers and digital content creators.
The establishment of regional production initiatives to mentor up-and-coming screenwriters and independent directors.
Advocacy for veteran support programs and for creative storytelling in the local media arts communities.
His career is a case in point of how a lifetime of dedication to the craft and to the subtle art of character work can result in cultural touchstones that live on for generations of moviegoers. The outpouring of tributes from fans and from people in the industry is quite simply amazing. CIO Bulletin views this development as a poignant moment of remembrance for a versatile screen icon whose body of work has had a massive impact on the history of American cinema.
