Spanish Researchers Advance Medical Technology for Kidney Repair

Breakthroughs in the field of regenerative medicine and transplantation Spanish scientists have broken through with kidney organoids and perfusion systems as the leaders of medical technology.

One of the significant breakthroughs in the field of medical technology has been made by a group of researchers based at the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Biomedical Research Institute of A Coruna (INIBIC). The team has come up with a scalable approach to generate human kidney organoids, which can be integrated with the pig kidneys to conduct transplantation studies.

The study that was published in Nature Biomedical Engineering presents the use of medical technology where the organoid and perfusion systems are used to allow organ regeneration prior to transplantation. The project under the role of Dr. Nuria Montserrat is a reflection of 10 years of advances in the field of regenerative medicine and bioengineering of organs.

The researchers managed to implant human kidney organoids in the porcine kidneys, and they were able to keep them alive without eliciting immune rejection. It is an innovative medical technology that enables real-time performance of organ functions, and possibly it can be used to ensure that transplant waiting time is minimized.

With the help of EBERS Medical Technology SL and several research partners all over the world, the work aims to conduct future clinical trials in the fields of organ regeneration and custom-made therapy.
