The fire spread from an Indian Oil refinery to oil and gas storage tanks there, killing two workers and another then, according to an official.
On Monday two deceased people were inside Indian Oil Corporation's (IOCL) refinery in Vadodara, Gujarat. The explosion that one of the benzene storage tanks caused resulted in an emergency and spread to two of the remaining benzene storage tanks.
A fire at the Koyali refinery in Vadodara, the site of the incident, was reported about 3.30 PM, information received. The blast produced dense smoke, which could be intercepted from several miles away. Fire brigades from nearby towns were called to the place and worked overnight, trying to douse the flames.
Dhimant Makwana and Shailesh Makwana, refinery workers, lost their lives in the disaster. An injured IOCL employee is stable in a private hospital. The flames swept on to oil and gas storage tanks, working against efforts to control the fire through the refinery's sprinkler system.
What caused the blaze is still being investigated in this regard. As per the procedures, the refinery was also shut down to avoid further destruction. IOCL also spared workers at the refinery and refused to allow more workers in for their safety.
This also demonstrates how there are inherent dangers in the oil and gas industry, where safety is very much needed. The boring threats have been managed by IOCL officials, local police, and district administrations, ensuring that the situation is well contained
