Mumbai Gets a Major Green Power Upgrade with Completion of Kudus–Aarey HVDC Project

A landmark transmission link promises cleaner energy, a stronger grid, and a more sustainable future for India’s financial capital.

Mumbai has taken a significant step toward a cleaner and more reliable energy future with the completion of the Kudus–Aarey High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project by Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL). The 320kV transmission link is designed to deliver an additional 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy into the city’s power grid, one of the most critical infrastructure upgrades Mumbai has seen in nearly 25 years.

As the city’s electricity demand continues to rise, this project arrives at a crucial time. Mumbai currently relies heavily on power imported from outside the city, while local generation meets less than half of its needs. With peak demand expected to cross 4,500MW this summer and approach 5,000MW in the coming years, the new HVDC link will play a key role in ensuring grid stability and uninterrupted power supply.

The project uses advanced Voltage Source Converter-based HVDC technology, allowing fast and precise control of power flow and improving voltage stability during sudden demand changes. Engineering the link was no small feat. It involved nearly 80 kilometers of transmission lines, including underground cables laid along major highways and a complex undersea crossing beneath Vasai Creek.

By enabling large-scale renewable energy to flow into Mumbai, the Kudus–Aarey HVDC project marks a decisive move toward greener power, supporting the city’s growth while reducing its carbon footprint.
