Stony Brook organized the global HPC summit to discuss important breakthroughs in science and technology that use AI, supercomputing and teamwork.
Stony Brook University hosted the 2025 Cray User Group (CUG) Meeting in New Jersey, uniting nearly 200 leading experts from all over the world in high-performance computing (HPC). HPC was shown to be transforming academic, government and industrial sectors across many science and technology fields during the weeklong event.
The conference included many technical sessions, panel discussions and practical workshops to highlight supercomputing’s role in solving difficult scientific problems. Harrison, director of IACS at Stony Brook, introduced the event by underlining how the institute supports science and innovation by promoting teamwork in research.
During his keynote, computational astrophysicist Mike Zingale highlighted how HPC lets scientists successfully model events in stars, showing just how important technology is for science.
After CUG 2025, Stony Brook organized a workshop for the public, “AI and HPC: Exploring New Possibilities,” on May 9 and 10. The workshop, arranged with participation from Brookhaven National Laboratory, examined how AI and supercomputing can speed up progress in science and technology.
In the opening remarks, Bill Tang of Princeton University stated that machine learning used in HPC technology is making progress toward making fusion energy work. The symposium emphasized the use of AI-based equipment and techniques for climate and energy research.
Stony Brook University’s leadership in science and technology grows because events like this spark innovation that crosses both fields and countries.
