Terry Fox, Sir Wilfrid Laurier,  Athlete, Currency

Terry Fox, a Canadian athlete and a Marathon of Hope’s activist, will get depicted on the following $5 Canadian banknotes.

Canadian athlete and activist Terry Fox, who will always remain synonymous with hope and strength, will soon be seen willing the next generation of Canadians into their new $5 bill. He will be replacing Sir Wilfrid Laurier, whose replacement will now appear on the $50 note. This announcement came through the fall economic statement of Monday.

Mainly for his "Marathon of Hope", a long-distance run cross-country with the declared objective of raising money for cancer research, Fox ran his 42 km daily on a prosthetic leg and raised $24.7 million between January and February 1981. He was his shining self, inspiring his fellow Canadians by demonstrating what courage truly was. Cancer may have stopped him, but the one-time event continues today through the annual Terry Fox Runs, raising an unbelievable total of more than $850 million for cancer research.

It is an honour that the Fox family would like to thank by saying that "Terry was always about raising his money, not recognition. We hope that this $5 bill will serve as a catalyst to inspire Canadians to continue funding for cancer research- a cause Terry has ever passionately supported."

The bank in 2020 listed many famous Canadians that could feature on the currency. The list was short-listed by a public consultation process. The shortlist was comprised of great figures hailing from different fields; however, one great sports figure and an activist made it into the final cut: Terry Fox.

Port Coquitlam was the first city to carry the torch for moving a campaign forward. Mayor Brad West highlighted that "Terry's courage continues to inspire and unite people even today."
