New technology helps officers communicate seamlessly with non-English speaking residents, improving public safety and community service.
The Norwalk Police Department has taken a major step to make communication easier between officers and residents who speak different languages. On January 12, the department launched a new translation program on its body cameras, marking a significant upgrade in public safety technology.
The department now uses Axon Body 4 cameras equipped with the company’s Real-Time Translation software, powered by AI through the Axon Assistant. This technology allows officers to communicate directly with residents in multiple languages, helping them provide critical assistance in situations ranging from traffic accidents to property issues.
Chief James Walsh emphasized the importance of the upgrade, calling it “a no-brainer” for a city as diverse as Norwalk. “Not only does it assist public safety, it assists in rendering services to people when it’s critical and during normal conversations. It just makes things a whole lot easier when the officer and the resident can communicate properly,” Walsh said.
The upgrade was approved by the Common Council and is currently being used on a 90-day trial basis. By breaking down language barriers, the department hopes to improve both efficiency and trust, ensuring residents feel heard and supported regardless of the language they speak.
For a city where multiple languages are spoken daily, this new AI translation tool represents a step forward in making law enforcement more accessible, responsive, and human-centered.
