Australia reinstates NDIS funding to art and music therapies, with new rates to cover qualified therapists and the continuity of participation by the participants.
The government of Australia has reinstated that Australian art and music therapists should be charged higher billing rates under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) because the reviews have established that they are effective.
The limit on hourly charges for these therapies has been reduced to 68 in the past, and the sector has cried out in dismay over the reduction and the issue of accessibility. The most recent review, by health economist Stephen Duckett, found that art and music therapies yield positive results for those who participate when administered by a skilled professional.
Since November 24, therapists are allowed to charge up to $156.16 per hour for counseling as long as they are accredited by a recognized association. The decision makes sure that participants have no interruption with the necessary art and music services.
The Minister of NDIS, Jenny McAllister, termed the outcome as a practical forward step for the participants and providers, citing the potential of the therapies to provide life-changing support to the people who are disabled.
Although welcome, industry bodies expressed concern over the implication of the new rate that art therapy is undervalued in terms of training and complexity in comparison with other allied health services. Nevertheless, the acknowledgment of art and music therapies as evidence-based support is a big victory for both therapists and users of NDIS.
