Ethiopian Aviation Takes Flight, Private Carriers Join Domestic Market

New Opportunities for Travelers and Investors as Private Carriers Begin Scheduled Flights

Ethiopia's aviation sector is soaring to new heights with a groundbreaking move to integrate private charter carriers into the scheduled domestic passenger and cargo market. The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority announced this transformative development on social media, revealing that private air transport operators have been granted licenses to offer regular flights, adding to their existing charter services.

For years, Ethiopian Airlines has been the sole provider of scheduled domestic flights, but now, eight private passenger charter operators, including Abyssinia Flight Services, Aquarius Aviation, and East African Aviation, are set to change the landscape. This move comes as part of a broader effort by the aviation authority to liberalize the domestic airline industry, updating and implementing new procedures to encourage private sector participation.

The goal is clear: to boost the aviation sector’s economic impact, attract more investors, enhance safety, improve regional connectivity, and stimulate tourism. Part of this ambitious plan includes a project to construct over 21 airstrips and helipads in underserved areas, further opening up the country.

This strategic shift is already showing results. In the first quarter of 2023, passenger traffic from Ethiopia surged 19% above pre-pandemic levels, far outpacing the overall growth in Africa, which saw an 8.7% increase.

With these changes, Ethiopia is not only enhancing its air transport infrastructure but also providing new opportunities for travelers and investors alike, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s aviation journey.
