Google Indie Games Fund Africa 2026 will provide $1 million in funding to support emerging African game studios, helping developers scale innovative games and grow the region's gaming ecosystem.
Google has committed US$1 million to promote independent game developers throughout Sub-Saharan Africa through the creation of the first-ever Google Indie Games Fund Africa 2026. By offering financial support and technical assistance to talented local studios looking to expand their operations and reach a global audience, CIO Bulletin believes that the program aims to support the region's expanding gaming sector.
Independent developers in Sub-Saharan Africa who have already released a mobile, PC or console game are eligible for the initiative. According to Google, the program aims to showcase African talent and innovation on the international gaming scene while assisting studios in developing sustainable companies.
"Bringing this fund to the continent underscores our commitment to unlocking the immense talent of local studios, providing the resources needed to scale businesses, refine creative visions, and share uniquely African stories with a global audience." - Ben McOwen Wilson, Managing Director for Google Play in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
As per the company, one of the fastest growing gaming markets in the world happens to be Sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a large number of storytelling and game designing talent available. However, despite the availability of so much creativity, it is quite difficult for the small studios to raise money to grow internationally.
A total of ten indie games companies will be selected to get grants from between $50,000 and $200,000 in this new project. Companies that are successful in this will not only get financial support but will also get mentoring and professional technical guidance to help improve their products and develop their businesses while making their games available to an international audience.
The Google Play Indie Games Fund will take applications till July 31, 2026, 12:00 UTC. Developers who want to apply for the fund are encouraged to visit the eligibility criteria and apply through the official website of the project.
